Steady the Buffs" Near Ovillers - Somme France. July 1916.

Pte. Harold Jago served with the Royal East Kent Regiment the 9th Buffs, in the Machine Gun Corps. you can see by checking his military record cards that he was involved in this theatre of war during the period of time the photograph was take. The equipment he used is not recorded but it is highly likely the Vickers machine gun was one he was familiar with. The photograph shows a British Vickers machine gun crew wearing PH-type anti-gas helmets. Near Ovillers during the Battle of the Somme, July 1916. The gunner is wearing a padded waistcoat, enabling him to carry the machine gun barrel. Imperial War Museum photograph Q3995. Note that the left hand soldier has an MGC (Machine Gun Corps) badge on his shoulder.

Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now. Keep it up!
