Pte. Harold Jago served with the Royal East Kent Regiment the 9th Buffs, in the Machine Gun Corps. you can see by checking his military record cards that he was involved in this theatre of war during the period of time the photograph was take. The equipment he used is not recorded but it is highly likely the Vickers machine gun was one he was familiar with. The photograph shows a British Vickers machine gun crew wearing PH-type anti-gas helmets. Near Ovillers during the Battle of the Somme, July 1916. The gunner is wearing a padded waistcoat, enabling him to carry the machine gun barrel. Imperial War Museum photograph Q3995.
