GEDCOM Viewer is a Java-based application that allows you to directly browse the contents of a GEDCOM file. As a Java application, it will run on any system that supports Java, including Windows, Mac, and Unix-like systems. It currently has the following features:
Navigate through GEDCOM, viewing individuals, families, notes, and sources in several formats (including rendered HTML, raw HTML, and raw GEDCOM).
View ancestor and descendant trees.
Check GEDCOMs for errors.
In addition, there are "add-ons" that provide the following features:
(HTML Export Add-on) Export GEDCOM data to HTML files that can be browsed by an ordinary Web browser. The output is similar to that produced by GED2HTML. HTML Export Add-on incorporates most of the customization options that GED2HTML has, with the important exception that the output generator currently cannot be reprogrammed as can be done with GED2HTML.
(HTML Import Add-on) Convert HTML back into GEDCOM. More specifically, import data from trees of HTML documents produced by various other systems, and save the results as GEDCOM. This can be done either from local files or over the Web. Currently handled are various versions of GED2HTML, individual data pages generated by the RootsWeb WorldConnect server, and data pages generated by GEDitCOM using the standard Web page style. Lots of people have asked me: "Do you have a program to convert HTML to GEDCOM", and I have has to say no -- until now! I am pretty well set up at this point to extend HTML Import Add-on to handle additional HTML formats, so if you have HTML pages produced by a particular generator that is in common use but not already handled by HTML Import Add-on and you want to convert them back to GEDCOM, then contact me and I might be willing to implement support for your particular format.
Further features are planned for the future. GEDCOM Viewer, HTML Export Add-on, and HTML Import Add-on are currently available for download and free demonstration for 14 days. After the demonstration period, purchased licenses are required to continue using GEDCOM Viewer and HTML Export Add-on. As I don't yet consider HTML Import Add-on to be "industrial strength", it is currently available under renewable demonstration status if you have a licensed copy of GEDCOM Viewer. There is no obligation involved in downloading and trying these products for the demonstration period. If you are interested in continuing to use them after the demonstration period, you can purchase licenses online, using screens provided by Gedcom Viewer for this purpose. Purchases are handled by kagi.com, through this web page.
Download GEDCOM Viewer (executable jar file). Save the file to your desktop or other convenient place and launch it by double clicking on it.
View the online documentation, which gives more details about the features of the program.
To run GEDCOM Viewer requires that you have Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0 or better installed on your computer. If the Java installation on your computer is not up-to-date, then use this link to get a free download of the latest version of the JRE, Standard Edition from Sun Microsystems.
